JACK THE RIPPER

Genre: Thriller, Horror, Slasher, Biographic

Quarter to eleven, traffic was fine, the absence of stars in the sky made the night quite darker than usual and I was walking down the Black Frost Park. I was on my way back home from the ironsmith's. I had gone there to collect some of my garage tools i had given for servicing.

The park was crowded with its usual emptiness, flavoured with extra darkness of a new-moon night. It was void of any sort of commotion except for the cricket's catchy calls and the frog's fierce croaking. But, the dark silence came back to engulf all that. Howling of wolves could be heard occasionally from the nearby woods.

Reinsville was a small town. Most of the stores would close by 10 p.m. and the roads would be deserted. People locked themselves up in their tiny little cribs, except for some nocturnal dwellers who sought the darkness to promote their nightly business.

As I strolled on, I could hear some conversation from behind a row of bushes not too far away. Walking closer up to the source, the voices got clearer.

Amongst their random hidden talks, I heard something that caught my attention.
"She wouldn't stop screaming, So I had to do it."

A different voice this time, "I get it, but, then, kill her? Man, that's too much!" Said another man.

"I had no choice. She made too much noise and that could catch unwanted attention. That's the last thing I would think of facing while looting an old lady!"

"So how did you do it?"

"I don't know, I just... I.. I panicked.. and.. and I shoved the crowbar into her eyes. She was out instantly. I know... I was... I was impulsive but she yelled! I.. I didn't think.. I was impulsive, and I just acted. Damn, I messed up. Well, then I dumped her body in the gutter below the bridge."

"That's gross! That actually reminds me of Jack. Jack Smith."

The conversation intrigued me too much and I stopped to eavesdrop into their frantic discussion, from behind the bushes. I was well concealed from their sight, yet, living dangerously is what I call it, with no help to look for if caught.

The first guy said, "You mean Jack the maniac? That crazy psychopath?"

"Yes. They say he ain't got no left eye. They say he poked it out to scare his wife and then fed it to her on the night of their divorce. Of course she was found dead the next morning!"

"Not just his own wife, the psycho is said to have been behind twenty one murders in the last five years."

"Yeah. This guy is literally a ghost. Like an urban legend in this town. He's been haunting the poor lives of this town. The strangest fact is that he never gets caught. Nobody knows when his murder spree will end, and the worse thing you know,  you could be his next!"

"Speaking of getting caught, you just screwed yourself up by killing that old lady!"

"Don't worry. I..."

"Excuse me gentlemen" I cut them short. Then I came out of the bushes and showed myself up to them.

"Hey, what the hell man? How long have you been there?"

"Long enough to get my appetite high for two interesting souls."

After a pause, I stepped forward and out of the shadow of an oak tree. I lifted my hooded head, letting the moon light fall on my face, exposing my eyes as well.

They gazed at me with utter terror.
"J-J... Jack?"

I took my hands out of my leather coat's pockets and brought out a candid butcher knife.

"Yes. I'm Jack. Jack the ripper!" I said, swinging my knife.

HUMAN CIVILIZATION - A Success or a Failure?

This is a question that looms beyond the understanding of human beings even till date.
It seems very possible to me that civilization may be the result of an accident that has led to so many things which have again led to such high expectations. In fact, humans are just an animal species led by urges and instincts of survival, supremacry and reproduction, that we conceal with civilized language.

For instance, human civilization has indedd been genius enough to construct massive architctural masterpieces formed from science and mathematics. But, have all these creations benefited the human species in the long run?

Decades were terrorized by war, countries face overpopulation, humans are so numerous in number and expanding that we have already destroyed much of the world's ecosystems. We have driven multiple animal and plant species to extinction, and our political systems have consistently failed to deliver their fantastical promises of a better world. Instead they have commonly delivered corruption and war.

It is in our innate nature, that which we have inherited from our ancesters. If there are two bananas, we want one in each hand. That's called greed. If our neighbour has one and we take it, that's called theft. If we throw a fellow off a tree and he dies, that's murder.

I'm neither a superstetious bor a blasphemous person yet i believe like an occult that we shall live to see a day of damnation when Evil will rule the earth, and when there'll be no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth. (Dawn of the Dead referrence) We indulge in illicit relationships, kill babies even before they ate born, cause mass ganocide and holocaust and we ourselves may call upon our own apocalypse.

We have actually progressed very little since we climbed out of the trees. Its true that we have excelled in the fields of innovations but in the end, we could quite easily go back to being like our pre-historic tree dwelling folks.

Based on all these matters I'm quite literally asking whether the human civilization is worth the costs and would humans be better off being at the same level with other animal apecies before civilization arose?

TRANSITION

GenreFantasy, Reflective.

As vague as it may seem, it may just as well make some sense to a few. Nature was generous enough to offer me a joyride across the valley amidst hell and heaven.

I am a lucid dreamer and the joyride was indeed a lucid dream of spectacular realism, atleast to me.
A green meadow it was, with an oak tree by the edge of a lake. As I recall, the lake shimmered like a bed of diamonds. The oak tree was of a deeper shade of green, than that of the meadow. In fact the meadow was so green that it keeps me from calling it barren, for it had nothing but the oak, the lake and us. We lay in the shadow of the tree, me and her, on a red n' white picnic cloth, my mother's favourite. The plain fields stretched to infinity and foreverness as I could see it make love to the horizon.
We soon had companions, love birds chirping on the oaken branches, like nature's aerial infantry. A habitat so small, I wondered, couldn't shelter much.

I felt like a constant, static gust of wind, rather a flying camera, filming everything, including myself. I saw myself lying next to her. I faced her and she faced me. We were deep asleep, yet we smiled. Her head rested just below my chin.

Among the blue and yellow love birds, I spotted a falcon pecking at a hole in the tree.
Sun peeped in through the leaves. There was this breeze that breathed life into my sleeping soul; it brushed along my neck, injecting bliss into me. I wondered if the oak and the lake alone could build a  breeze so sweet, for there was only low lying grass in the meadow and no clouds in the perfect blue sky- none at all. It wasn't mother nature's, it was rather the breath of nature's reincarnation. It was her, breathing softly against my neck.

Oh, did I not mention who she was?
She was the most beautiful thing that had ever happened to me. She was my fuel, my teacher, my weakness and my other half. She was the reflection of my introvert soul.
We lay there, deep asleep, among the green.

They say a dream is a compilation of our daily experience. A manipulated recollection of what we see, feel and do. Well, indeed it's not true at times. But, this one was nature's treat, different in it's own way. It was lucid, rare and vivid; vivid enough to trap me in a semi conscious roller coaster ride of virtual intuitions and self-doctored de-ja-vu.

I noticed the sun set slowly. There was snow on the crest of the tree. It had just started to snow. Though the lake didn't freeze yet, it was no more a bed a diamonds. The birds were fewer in number. I saw the falcon drag a dead snake out of the hole. To my deepest astonishment, the birds had no eyes! Their sockets were dark and void, and I could see right through their dead souls.
The oak leaves seemed less green.

I noticed that the breeze had ceased to blow. She breathed no more. I realised that her face had turned pale and her lips were dry. A sudden fit of panic rushed through me as I struggled to wake up and check on her, but I couldn't. I was paralysed in my sleep, in my dream. I also noticed that i too wasn't breathing. Our faces lacked the smile they portrayed earlier. I was drained off every last drop of peace that she had breathed into me.

I turned my helpless gaze at the lake to find it's water all red. If diamonds could melt and change state to blood, I presume it wasn't a very unusual sight. But I fear it was.

Perhaps all along, we weren't the only human beings in the meadow since I noticed a boy lying on the other side of the tree. There was a girl hanging by her neck, from one of the branches of the oak, right above the boy's lifeless body. There was another hangman's knot hanging right beside her. It probably belonged to the boy's neck. Maybe the young lad was the first to go, and the girl followed.

After the sunset, it was pitch black all around. The moon was dyed in red, not bright enough to guide the night. As darkness prevailed, the camera faded out, so did the lucidity.
I heard a solemn voice, chanting,"Let there be light."
There was light again. I was awake.
